Fluoride & Decay Prevention

Do you know why the American Dental Association and the American Medical Association both endorse the use of fluoride for the prevention of tooth decay? Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that has been shown to help strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay in children and adults.

Why do children need fluoride?

Fluoride is important in protecting children’s teeth. Bacteria in the mouth combine with sugars that produce acid that harms the tooth. Fluoride strengthens the teeth and protects them from the damaging effects.

How do children get fluoride?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), along with the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agree that water fluoridation is a safe and effective way to help prevent tooth decay. Most communities have fluoridated water which helps strengthen tooth enamel. There are other important topical ways for children to get the fluoride they need, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and fluoride treatments.

What are the Fluoride Recommendations?

The AAPD encourages brushing with appropriate amounts of fluoride toothpaste twice daily for all children. Monitoring children’s use of topical fluoride-containing products, including toothpaste, may prevent the ingestion of excessive amounts of fluoride. Many clinical trials have confirmed the positive effect of professional topical fluoride treatments.
